Happy Friday everyone and welcome to the Home Decor hop hosted by Faith @ Faithfule Creations! If you’ve just come from Krista’s blog, you’re going in the right direction, but if not, be sure to start at Faith’s blog so you don’t miss a single stop!
When Faith put us up to the task of creating something for the home that wasn’t a card or a layout, I immediately knew what I wanted to make. I have been searching for a jewelry organizer for months. I needed something that could either be mounted to the wall or free standing/leaning and had enough space for all the things I wear the most. I also wanted it to be full of my personality and be relatively inexpensive. What I came up with is shown below with a crazy adorable giveaway at the end so be sure to read all the way through!
First, I took a piece of wood measuring 1″ deep and about 12″ wide x 24″ long. You can cut your wood to fit however many jewelry pieces you want to display. I could have easily made this three times as big! {I still might make this into a series – beauty meets function!}
I wanted a bit of a vintage look to my organizer, so I used an Americana by DecoArt Stain – “White Wash”. Really easy and since it’s water-based, it dries fairly quickly. Make sure you sand with a medium grit followed by a fine grit so your wood is smooth for the stain.
Next, I applied painter’s tape to create a border for my organizer. Disregard the pilot holes – we were obviously not measuring the first time! Ha! We’ll cover it up in the next few steps.
Paint desired border color. Notice how that piece of tape is sticking up a little bit? You guessed it, there was seepage under there. I had too much water in my brush. Since we’re going to be covering it up, it wasn’t a huge deal, but definitely not what you want. We’ll just roll with it.
7 Gypsies paper tape. I use these A LOT. They are so beautiful when a single layer is put down because they are transparent, but for a more opaque look, I doubled the layer to create my inner border. You might recognize some of these tapes from my canvas project I created a few months ago.
After you put all your tape down to create the border, seal with Mod Podge or your favorite water-based sealer.
Next, I applied bakers’ twine from The Twinery {color is Cappuccino} to create a little interest between the two borders. Ok, you’re right. I really just wanted an excuse to use my twine – which ends up on ALMOST every project I make! I can’t help it! I also repeat the use of twine inside the organizer for my earrings. To adhere the bakers’ twine, I used Glossy Accents {which dries super fast}. When I double up twine like I did on the frame, I use a straight edge to make sure the twine doesn’t shift as I pull it along. Holding a straight edge in place for a few moments gives the Glossy Accents a chance to dry {just a matter of seconds}.
Do any of you get Sephora emails? They are always addressed as “Hello Beautiful” or “Hello Gorgeous”, and I love that. Just because some days you don’t FEEL like getting ready or putting yourself together and it’s all about the positive self-affirmations right?
I used Scrabble Tiles to spell out a fun phrase that will get ME in the mood for getting ready each morning!
I used Carpenter’s Glue to adhere them to the wood. Dried almost instantly.
Once the Mod Podge is completely dry, spray with an acrylic sealer prior to attaching hardware. I found some CHEAP drawer pulls at my local hardware store. I used towel hooks, too, each of these pieces retailed for about $1 or less. The towel hooks were covered in 7 Gypsies tape and Mod Podged to seal.

I feel a project coming on. I will send you a photo link when I finish it, hopefully this summer and you can see what you inspired. Thanks for the inspiration.

What a cool idea, Angelica! You did a fabulous job on this! I could use something like it too as I am constantly hunting for my favorite pieces. I visited Samantha’s site, liked her FB page and selected this Casablanca necklace as my favorite. I’m an earthy person too and the browns of the wood pieces really appeals to me. Plus I’m very sensitive to all metals but sterling silver and 14K gold.
